The Scourge strikes at the cities of both factions, and the Alliance and the Horde sail for Northrend, the frozen continent where the Lich King waits in Icecrown Citadel. Death knights become playable, starting as the Lich King's servants in the Plaguelands, and the zones between the coast and Icecrown are full of old Warcraft III faces.
Books connected to this game
- Read afterWorld of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
Follows the Outland campaign and finally brings the Lich King, last seen at the end of The Frozen Throne, to center stage. Play The Burning Crusade first.
- Comes beforeWorld of Warcraft: Cataclysm
Opens in the aftermath of the war in Northrend, with both factions changed by how it ended. Wrath comes first.
- Comes afterWorld of Warcraft: Arthas: Rise of the Lich King
Interludes set just before Wrath of the Lich King lead into the expansion, and reading it first gives Northrend's villain his full history.
- Comes afterWorld of Warcraft: Book Two
Explains how Varian is back on Stormwind's throne, and in a temper, by the time Wrath of the Lich King begins.
- Comes afterWorld of Warcraft: Ashbringer
The Mograines' story ends where the death knight starting zone in Wrath picks it up. Read the comic first; it doesn't spoil the game.
- Comes beforeWorld of Warcraft: Stormrage
Begins after Wrath's final raid and assumes you know how it went. Read it between Wrath and Cataclysm.
- Comes beforeWorld of Warcraft: The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm
Opens right after the war in Northrend and assumes you know how it ended. Finish Wrath of the Lich King first.
